When Perfect and New Wear Off ...

I'm guesting today over at Sue's (Praise and Coffee), talking about the glitz and glamor of a new kitchen, and when the newness wears off.

" ... then life became ... reality. The kitchen, that once was sparkling new, didn't seem that new any more. The glitter of it all started to fade as I still had to do dishes, my stacks of "stuff" piled up on the counters, the kids made huge messes, the cupboards needed wiping down, my busy life left it looking not so pretty anymore.

Read the rest of the story, here."

On Sunday, when we harvested tomatoes and potatoes, how could I forget these?

My favorite - beets.

Made into a beautiful salad for dinner that night. Okay, I'll admit it. It takes maturity for a kid to like beets. My kids weren't too thrilled, as they picked through the salad and pulled out most of the beets.  How could they?

And then parsnips.

Yes, they smell like dirt and the ground.

But they are delicious, and my husband and I love them!  He is Irish, but I've learned to really appreciate them (that is a kind word.)

I used parsnips in dinner last night, only to find when my daughter got home from soccer, these were on the cutting board.

Again, she picked these out of the soup.

Does your family eat parsnips and beets?

Or what do they pick out?

Hmmmm... Parsnips and beets. I fear I'm as picky as your kids. :-) I've never really developed a taste for them. Maybe if I had them disguised in a really good dish? Hope you're having a good day!

I don't eat either so therefore I don't feed them to my kids. ;) Your soup does look delicious though.

Sandy, I loved how you used that passage from Luke in your guest post. I love reading familiar passages in "The Message" version because it tends to catch my attention in a different way. What a fantastic passage to apply to entertaining and making people feel welcome in our homes!

We all just adore beets & parsnips around here. My friends makes a beet salad with this lovely orange flavored dressing. It is heavenly.

I must admit I've never had a parsnip. We all love beets except my youngest. She's tried but it hasn't happened yet!!

I haven't yet made it to the world of beets, but I don't mind parsnips. My husband loves beets-I really should fix them more for him! Once I figure out what to do with them that is!

Yes, we all eat beets, not parsnips, but we do eat turnips (are they the same? kind of?).

My grandmother grows 1000's of beets every year and pickles them. We love them fresh in the fall, and then from the root cellar all year. We eat them pickled several times a week.

Borscht ... mmmmm!

Two cultural backgrounds in my little family but my husband lovingly eats all I put before him. The son....well, never let him have a choice but I did (and still do) give him smaller servings of those things he does not like! Grin. Love love love beats and parsnips...love best in a good hearty stew where all flavours mingle to taste good...not matter parsnips or not!

My kids LOVE pickled beets---at least Crystal and Jon do---
When they were little we had a huge garden---we grew a ton on beets. I would harvest them all on one day. The kids would sort them by size and we'd pickle and can them. They loved to slip off the skins---we probably ate a good amount before they went into the jars!!
We have not had a garden for years now (new house, deer and soil problems) but this year I bought beets at the Grower's Market, they are pickled waiting for Christmas Baskets for my grown children.
My son Jon's theory is that people who ate beets as kids, are the ones that like them as adults.
Parsnips and Rutabagas I can live without...LOL

This. That. And the OTHER said...

I put parsnips in chicken noodle soup and sometimes into split pea! YUMMY!

We absolutely, LOVE beets!! My little ones (2 & 1 yr old) eat pickled beets like candy. ;) - we really enjoy them with Potato Pie. PA dutch thing - I suppose.

Don't know potato pie is? leave a comment - I'll have to do a post on it sometime.

I'm drooling - thinking about it!!

We LOVE beets, except for that time my mom thought she pulled blackberries from the freezer and made a beet cobbler by mistake. Hey, they're both purple ya know! I took the first bite and about....well you can imagine! Beets that do not find themself in a cobbler are the best! We are having them for dinner tonight with our salmon.
Do you like turnips? They are good too.

Beautiful truth shared over at Praise and Coffee. I know many will be blessed!

And like PK - I'm more picky like your children. I'd pick mine out, too... but your food "looked" delicious. :-)
