What's Your Style? - Yard Sale!

After reminding myself of the $600 I made from our yard sale last year, I was inspired to ask the kids to clean through their rooms again, and to start cleaning through my kitchen and entertaining items.

I even got my husband inspired to clean his work bench, as we sat together in the garage last week (gimpy foot and all, I wasn't any help!), and we ate a gourmet meal - a Costco frozen pizza!

My friends and I had already scheduled a date the first week in June, as we all were ready to go, but we had to cancel.

So my stash sits in the garage!  And soon my treasures will become someone else's!

Most of the entertaining items I am getting rid of were purchased at yard sales, so it's not always easy for me to let go of something that I paid so little for. But our styles do change throughout the years, so this time I stuck with my own personal guideline:

What's my Style?

1. I'm more of a "silver" girl now. (Top candle sticks - getting rid of. Silver - I'm keeping.)

2. Baskets are a girl's best friend - but you can have too many and I didn't like the style of these anymore.

3. Mugs are hip and fun to serve coffee, after a nice dessert, but I'm just out of the coffee-serving-routine these days.

4. Boxes of plastic stemware have been replaced by my Dollar Store goblets. A little more sturdy and classier, in my opinion.

5. Wreaths can start looking worn and dingy - time to let them go.

It feels SO good to recycle my treasures.

Cleaning, thinning out, and reorganizing, while asking myself, What's my Style?, helped me decide what to keep and what to get rid of.

Do you keep in mind your "style" when you purge or reorganize?

Or I'd love to hear your method of getting ready for a sale?

Now head on over to Rhoda's Yard Sale party and see her thrifty finds for the week!

Hey, Sandy, clearing out the old will just make room for those new treasures you run across. And since you didn't pay much for them, you can pass them onto someone else to enjoy. That's the way I look at it too. Purging is good! I have to do it periodically myself. I'm sure I'll have another sale in the next few months too.

I have been contemplating having a yard sale soon myself! I don't know that I think of a style when I clear out. . .it is more 'what haven't I used in some time, and will I miss it when its gone?'

To prepare, I try to go through and decide what to put in the sale, then price it right away, before I put it in a box. That way, everything is all set and I can just set things out on a table with a cloth on the morning of the sale!

Wow, that's a lot of money to make at a yard sale. I usually only make $80 with one large item sold that went for half that amount. I think of all the time I spent getting ready. Then I spend the day of the sale tending my tables. I always regret the time wasted and the little money I make. I think that my time is worth more than that and I would be further ahead if I just donated the stuff and get the charitable tax deduction.

I'm getting ready (have a lot to do) for a garage sale in August. I wish I had more time and patience to go to garage sales to find all the great deals! I did get some great deals in the Spring.

I bought 3 rooster themed kitchen decor items at HomeGoods a couple of years ago. They're really pretty but roosters never have been me! Other than the good buy, I don't know why I bought them. Now I feel compelled to use them. I should put those in a garage sale or, better yet, find someone who does love roosters and give them away!

My style has definitely changed over the years. I feel it is going a bit more modern.

$600 is so impressive. I believe the one and only yard sale I had, I made $35. How do you market your sale? newspaper, signs throughout the neighborhood...?

I'd love the have a garage sale to clear out old things but I can't where I'm living right now. HOA forbids it.

Purging is always good. It's the letting go that's hard! lol

What a great post. Ironically, I am considering having a yard sale as well--either that our donate it to the church rummage sale. I definitely thy to think, "Do I really need/love/want/use this _____?" If I can't say, "yes", it's time to let go.

I read a comment another blogger wrote once and I absolutely thought it was super:
"Would my most fabulous self have that?"

If you can't say yes to that one--don't keep it--or don't buy it, etc. Great advice if you as me!

I need to do this myself. I keep saying that I need to purge my closets, but it hasn't happened yet. Now we are in the triple digits and it is just too hot to have a sale.

It's always great to recycle old goods and replace them with fun bargains! :O)

I am finding that my tastes are changing very much so I think that perhaps I too should start thinking about recycling some of my goodies. Hmmm...

I wish I lived by you so I could come to your yard sale. We just had one at the end of May. I did keep my style in mind when choosing what to get rid of. I got rid of some old mugs and dishes i haven't used in ages. I don't have a ton of decorative things but, I got rid of a few things I received for my wedding that I never used because they weren't really my style. :)

I hope the new sale date is one that I can join you. My boxes of ¨treasures¨ remain in the basement
until I get home, plus I´m sure there is more to find.

Hi, Sandy! I'm visiting from Rhoda's party. It was fun to read about your style. :) I do keep my style in mind when yard saling. I'm trying to update my style a bit. Hope your next sale is a hit! (And we love Costco pizza at our house) ;)

I need to have a yard sale, but it is hard for me to get rid of things. I need to do as you say & figure out what my style is now & get rid of everything else. I need to think of it as making room for new treasures instead of having to part with old.

We had a major garage sale at the end of May and it felt so good to be rid of so much "stuff". I'm working on filling the empty places around the house now... Hope to see you soon over at my blog.

Our hallways are loaded with bags from my daughters purge. We worked a couple hours last night to help her get the job done. Feels great. This time through I'm taking everything to the thrift store to donate. We don't have a saturday to donate to a garage sale the 6 weeks I'm here. I'll have to seriously start going through my stuff when we get to move back up her permanently...
