Little Helpers in the Garden!

Meet my Guest:

Jamie from The Blissfully Happy Housewife

I would first like to thank Sandy for hosting me.  It is truly an honor to be her guest, especially since she is such an inspiration to me!!

That said, part of the reason I enjoy reading 4 Reluctant Entertainers is that entertaining is something close to my heart.  There are so many aspects to entertaining that love, but one of my favorites is having special touches around my home to show people that they are important to me.  I’ve learned that in all areas of life the little things are actually the big things.

This year we have decided to grow a garden.  I felt it would be a wonderful way to add personal touches to my home (fresh cut flowers) and my cooking (helllloooo fresh veggies!).  It is the first garden I’ve had since I was a little girl so I have a lot to learn…but isn’t that some of the fun in an adventure like this?

For those of you that have never had a garden and are interested in trying one feel free to hop on over to my blog this summer as I plan to share all of my experiences…good and bad …in hopes that my readers can learn from them (and also share any of their wisdom with me)!

We started our garden by digging up a small area.  I originally was going to keep my garden very small with only a few veggies, but my husband Matt and I quickly realized that there are a lot of things we would love to try growing!  So it is now bigger than anticipated, but still not huge.  Matt and our four year old daughter dug up the sod and tilled it for me.

Everything is now planted.  Some things we planted from seed, and other things we used plants for.  We also planted flowers around the edges of the garden.  We were told they would keep the bunnies away…but quite honestly I just think they look pretty!

We have potatoes, onions, beans, green peppers, tomatoes, basil, and cilantro.  As you can tell from the pictures my children, Eva and Jaden, helped me plant nearly everything.  For those of you with little ones, this is an amazing experience for them! I’ve already found that within the garden many lessons are to be learned…for all of us.

I'm not sure how I found Jamie, or how Jamie found me - but I appreciate her blog and her love for nature and family and God.  We also share a love for the garden and fresh veggies. Thank you, Jamie, for being my guest today!

Your little helpers in the garden really do make me SMILE :)

I'd love to hear if you've included your children in gardening?

Remember, a garden doesn't have

to be a huge plot of land.

It can be as simple as pots on your back patio!

Great post! And great garden. My oldest son, who is 3 and a half, loves gardening with my mother-in-law... loves it! He has taught me things I didn't know! They have fun for hours on end in the great outdoors gardening and talking about plants and flowers.

We have a veggie garden too. I've tried including my girls in my gardening adventures. My three year old planted radish seeds...she's thrilled to see the radishes now ready!

Whenever I've had a garden I've enlisted the help of my girls. This year I did it myself as they were helping their dad haul wood.

I blogged about you today in my WFMW post. It features ideas to do with your children, to beat the summer boredoms. I just thought I'd let you know I linked to you.
Thanks for a great post!

Congrats to your book winner!

I have been delayed this spring in getting my garden going. I'm hoping it's not too late!

This has reminded and inspired me to get out there and get it moving... NOW! Thanks! :-)

Too cute!

Hunter LOVED helping. The only problem was... I'd plant... he'd dig up. Right behind me. So frustrating.

Now, he loves to help water the garden and he yells at the bunnies from inside when he sees them close to "our garden" -- so protective.

Jamie inspired me to start a garden, mine is in pots, but it's still a garden. I call it my caprese garden because it's tomatoes and basil and that is what I'm growing it for. Great post J.

My most recent post is about our family's peaking interest in gardening. We're not brave enough to start with food, but we're working on keeping the flowers that we planted alive. ;)

We've just started a garden partnership with our next door neighbors. We use their land, but share costs and labor. Both of our families are super busy, so it's a great way to enjoy the benefits of a garden with half the work!

My two-year-old had a blast planting our potatoes. Just dig a hole and plop them in. Easy. And I didn't have to worry about his overeager hands squashing veggie seedlings. ;-)
