Definitely my mom taught me the most about entertaining. From the greeting to the goodbye she's always had it down to a science and one particular tradition that we now both do is to take a picture of our table with all the food on it as it is always a masterpiece in its own right.

Forgot to tell you. My grandad was a great entertainer. Every year he would fish for crappie all year long then have a huge fish fry for the whole church with all the fixings. We all looked forward to this all year. I miss him and his fish and puppies!kwscomet@aol.com

My mother taught me all about hospitality. I learned how to tidy up in a moments notice and how to always have something on hand to be able to whip up some food.
My first glimpse of entertaining were the birthday parties she threw for us when we were kids. We had the best parties!

my greatest examples...

Mrs.W when I was in college - her husband was on staff - and her door was always open. We hung out there when they were home & when they weren't, we ate their food & took over their television... and they loved us.

Judy - my pastor's wife - they gave me a place to live when I was engaged - and made me a part of the family (complete with chores & a built in little sister to share a room with). I watched Judy joyfully open her home (and heart) for guests, without stressing over it, and I learned a lot from her.

I would say my grandma. She taught the neighborhood kids "lessons" on how to behave, speak clearly, have manners, etc. It was really her thing. She even had a parlor. So when we went to visit, I watched and learned. What to do when people came over, etc. It was always so much fun. Fun giveaway!

My greatest influence would be my mom. She always had food in the house and tricks up her sleeve to extend whatever we had to include more! I try to follow her example.

My girlfriend's mom, Mrs. Z, is the ultimate hostess/entertainer. I've learned so much from her.

Oh my goodness; what a cool giveaway!

I have learned the most about hospitality from my Aunt Ann and my paternal grandparents. My aunt hosts the major family holiday get-togethers at her house. She puts us up for a couple nights wherever there is space; she cooks us absolutely delicious food the entire time we are there. She makes it clear that she wants us to feel as comfortable in her home as her immediate family does.

My grandparents seem so at ease with visitors because they incorporate whoever is staying with them into their normal everyday comings and goings.

The common thread with both of these is the desire for the guest to feel taken care of and part of the regular family. I love that and am trying to adopt that same attitude with people who visit my home!

My mom's best friend Ginny. She has passed on now, but I still remember fondly her Thursday night suppers. Everyone she met, old friends and new, were always welcome on Thursday nights for dinner at her house. As a young child, even as a teenager, I always enjoyed those Thursday night dinners. She taught me all about entertaining and how to cook and I still hold on dearly to the cookbooks she gifted me with their personalized inscriptions in the front. What I would do now to be able to sit down with her over dinner once again.

My grandmother, that lived with us from the time I was in the 3rd Grade until she died which was after I left home, taught me to cook and how to be a gracious hostess. She owned a meat and three cafe most of her life and I was raised there. I sure do miss her and the cafe! My parents sold it in 1990.

You know, I think I've learned the most from my former pastor's wife. Her home is always open and often a bit chaotic, but her desire to share a meal with friends overshadows any embarassment she might feel about the condition of her home. She's an incredibly busy woman and I just really admire her talent of making others feel important even though she's clearly got other things she could be doing.

PS. I've got your giveaway noted and linked on my sidebar right at the top!!

I'd love to win this box of goodies! My mother, who is now in a nursing home, was the best example of hospitality I've ever known. It was not unusual for us to have 2,3 or more extra people eat with us on Sundays after church. There were already 7 of us to cook for, but she thought nothing about having a few more over! She taught me that cooking and entertaining is a great way to show your love; not only to your family but to everyone.

I would have to say my Grandma S. - she was always so gracious. She would bring out the fancy tea cups and not worry that the kids might break them. My good friend Gerri has been my example of hospitality . She opens her house to countless college students for Sunday dinners, impromptu suppers, and holiday potlucks and we have been fortunate to see her house filled with family friends on many occasions. She has shown me that it doesnt have to be perfect, it's the people that matter and you have done the same thing with your blog. It's taken me years to shrug off that lie that my house isn't pretty enough, or there isn't enough room...hospitality speaks volumes of love that we all need!

What a fun giveaway. I could use this right now. I'm on bed rest and my daughter could use something new to snack on.

My example-- I wish that I had one. Growing up my mother hated having people over. Our house wasn't one that even as a child I wanted to have people there. I was determined that when I was on my own I would have a place that was warm and welcoming. A home where my children want to bring there friends to. Without having a real example, I've had to learn the details and the art of entertaining on my own. But fortunately there are resources out there that have been helpful. I'm not perfect, but I love having people over and will for years to come!

Hope to win! nicolmontero at gmail dot com

My mom. Definitely. My dad is a pastor and my mom was constantly entertaining, many times at a moment's notice. Both of my grandmas were the perfect hosts. My paternal grandma was the ultimate host. She loved the beautifully set table and the immaculately clean home and the delicious food that was never your typical find on an ordinary dinner table. She knew how to host a dinner party perfectly. My maternal grandmother LOVED to have big dinners, but mainly with family. She cooked the most delicious comfort foods and her home was always warm, comfortable and inviting. You wanted to fill your belly and then lounge on her "davenport" and talk for hours. I love them both and am grateful that I learned so much from them...and so now, my hosting style...lies somewhere in the middle! Wow..that was long...kinda fun to reflect on 2 of the most wonderful women in my life!

My grandmother and my mother both are my prime hospitality examples. They both love primarily family gatherings but I remember New Year's Eve parties when I was a kid - my mother could throw a good party. She still enjoys them on a smaller scale and it seems I've taken on the "big party planner" role in the family now.

My family has a very casual entertaining style, but what my mom, grandmother, and aunt taught me was to ALWAYS make people feel welcome and special when they are in your home. What I learned on my own, probably due to my experience as a wedding planner, it to really think about guests special needs/interests. So,if I have someone coming over and I know they have a special/particular favorite food or beverage I will have it in the house and ready for them.

Even later as an adult when I took friends home, they would always tell me how welcomed they felt by my mam and dad's friendliness. :-)
This is a great giveaway Sandy - thanks for the chance to enter.

My mom definitely taught me all I know about hospitality. If she was planning on having a family of six over, she always planned on having a family of ten, just in case. I don't remember ever running out of food before the meal was over unless we were having leftover night!

I'd love to win this! It's been so long since we've been able to afford nearly all of that, and my mouth is watering just thinking about those cookies. Yummy!

Wow - what a fun giveaway. My mom taught me the most about being a great hostess....although I think my house is a bit messier than hers was when entertaining.

Definitely my husband's grandmother. She was the hostess with the mostest!
She cooked like no other, and her presentation was always beautiful. She was gracious and generous!

My greatest inspiration and education about hospitality comes from my sisters. They’ve taught me by example- they’re always relaxed and remain themselves no matter the event or number of guests. They always make others feel welcome in their kitchens and homes. They put a little love into everything they cook, and that makes them my heros!

Chelsie said...

Hospitality would have to come from my best friend, Crystal. Every time she made a meal through our college years, half the girls in our building would be invited to eat. She always went to great lengths to share her time and efforts both in her home and in others.

Sandy,

Don't laugh, my stepdad has taught me the most about hospitality! Whenever we have a get-together at their house, he makes you feel so pampered and full. Really, really full!

Oh by FAR my mom...she taught me how to be a gracious hostess, as well as how to prep as much as you can ahead of time so that you can enjoy your company! It makes entertaining soooo much easier and enjoyable!

I've learned alot from my older sister! She is amazing! She is a single mother of two boys and works so hard to support them both! If I win I plan on giving this to her, because buying food is tough for her at times!

I learned so much about hospitality from my mom and her mother, Nanny. Our home was always open and my mom always wanted our friends to think of our home as their home. My Nanny always had "something" cooking for the kids and I knew that there would be yeast rolls every morning for breakfast. I was lucky to have two great roll models.

I have also linked this to my blog. :) What an amazing giveaway that I'm sure my college son and room mate will love to raid.

My primary hospitality influence has been my mom. She plans ahead well so she is mostly relaxed when guests arrive and always sets a pretty table.

My best friend, Lena, taught me the most about hospitality. I don't feel like I have to have a perfect home anymore to have people visit. They're here for the company, not to inspect my dishes or laundry. It's a hard lesson to learn.

Strangers (at the time), the Smiths, noticed that my family were first-time visitors to their church, so they invited us to their home for lunch. They were a family of 8, we were a family of 4 at the time, and another family joined us. We later learned that this was their normal practice each week! Chicken casserole, a salad, and ice cream dessert were on the menu. I learned that entertaining strangers, looking for opportunities, simplicity, and genuine care are the heart of hospitality!

I would love to win! jasonandtera@gmail.com I have learned the most about hospitality from my Grandmother. Her house was never "perfect" but at the same time, you could show up at her house almost any moment of any day and she would be ready to receive guests...she would be dressed, hair tidy...she would have refreshments in the fridge and her main rooms (kitchen, entry, living room, etc.) would be tidy enough for any guest to make themselves at home. I strive to be more like her.

My mom probably taught me the most about hospitality. There were always other people around when I was a kid and she fed them all and made them welcome. But I would also have to say my best friend Cheryl is probably the hostess with the mostest. She can even make you feel welcome and cared for in your own home!

I'd have to say my grandmother taught me the most about hospitality. Just watching her take care of people in her home was a huge lesson in itself. What meant the most was her taking the time to teach me individually. She's an awesome lady!

Actually, I two women in my life have been extremely instrumental in teaching me about hospitality: my godmother Josette (who has since passed away but left me with many wonderful memories of how to entertain a houseful, and all with exquisite French cuisine to boot!) and of course my mom, who learned much about what she knows about true hospitality from her grandmother. I love how some of the things I do are literally passed down from generations before me.

I try to always learn from those around me. My grandfather on my father's side taught me about silent respect, let people speak, speak in a tone of understanding and respect... From other family members, to stand when an elder or client walks into the room to show them respect. From both my grandmothers... offer refreshments to guests, guests are always served first, etc. So many to name!

I also tweeted about your contest! I couldn't find a button to follow you on twitter so I just google reader followed you.

Thanks!

Sadly, I didn't really have any family that practiced hospitality around me. I work hard to reverse that for my children. I was, fortunately, the receipent of great hospitality from an older couple in my church when I was in college. They took me in as their own child, fed me, prayed for me, and cared for me. I cried more at the funeral when that dear man died than at any other. They became family!!

I would have to say my mom taught me the most about hospitality. Raising 7 children she always made it a point to have food on the table. Her kitchen was always open and anyone that entered her home never left hungry. What an example! 7 children and 13 grandchildren later she still is the same and we love to go home to moms! She truly is the most hospitable woman that I know.

Who has been the most hospitable? My mom definitely. I have wonderful memories of my childhood when my parents would have friends over. I would curl up on her lap after dinner when they would serve coffee and dessert and just talk, and it was such a great place to be! I was such a little girl but the memories of the aroma of coffe and the clink of the spoons against the china takes me back.
