Apples (and winner(s)!)

Look at the size of this apple!

This time of year I anticipate the phone call when my good friend Roger calls to say, “Sandy, the apples are ready!”

Sharing apples with our family has been a tradition for years. Sometimes we pick them ourselves, but many times he and his wife, Faye, deliver them to our home.

Last night they delivered buckets of Golden Delicious apples to us. They have been so hospitable in sharing their garden and fruit with us over the years. It is a memory my kids have forged in their minds, a true gift of hospitality.

I often wonder if Roger and Faye know the impact that they have on our family, in their giving ways, in every time we bite into these delicious apples or open a new jar of applesauce or apple butter.

The quart jars are now washed and ready for the homemade applesauce processing. It’s easy and fun for the kids to participate in.

Lined up in the pantry, applesauce is not only beautiful to look at but yummy for winter eating, warmed with whipped cream on top.

It’s a true crowd-pleasing snack.

Speaking of crowd-pleasing, I’ve decided to give away “three” copies of No More Jellyfish, Chickens or Wimps (see last post).

The winners are:
Peach, Valley Girl and Dee Light!

Congratulations, girls! Email me with your mailing addresses, please.

And lastly, for those of you who inquired about the 700 Club Dinner, the napkins came from the sale rack at Harry & David’s store a few years back.

We served the following at our dinner: salad, homemade dill bread (recipe will be posted in an upcoming post), barbequed green beans, baked potatoes and barbequed salmon.

My friend Pam made a delicious fresh fruit cobbler, served with vanilla ice cream, for dessert.

Makes your mouth water, uh?

Woo-hoo!!

You've inspired me so much and this post is exactly along the lines of something we're planning for next year's garden. My mother-in-law knows I'm no green thumb (and that's putting it mildly!), but said I should just plant potatoes and squash over the whole 1/2 acre plot to at least keep the weeds down. I've decided to do just that, and she can take as many as she wants for herself as well as our old church, for which she's the food services lady.

I'm so looking forward to the book!

The apples look delicious, and barbecued green beans -- yummy! I may need to know how you do that, too.

Thanks for always reminding me of your acrostic about FEAR -- I've been including it in the last couple of posts. I put it at the bottom again this week : )

Thank you, too, Sandy, for the book. I am delighted and look forward to reading it with my DP. What fun!

Have a great weekend, and I'll be emailing my info. here in a second.

I've never heard of the whipped cream trick--yum! I luv fall and just picked out my dream apple tree, which I'm hoping to order here shortly for our place. Lucky book winners--Jellyfish is a great read! Congratulations!

Apples signal the start of fall to me. You'll be busy with all of yours.

I was fortunate to find some Gravensteins at the local produce market. They don't seem to be available very often and remind me of my childhood in Grandfathers orchard.

Congrats to the lucky book winners.

I love apple season! There is nothing like biting into a fresh, crisp apple. It also means autumn and that is my favorite!

Cheers! LA

I came across your blog today. What a beautiful blog! I love to entertain and find that it is awesome that someone else is blogging about it!

Also, those apples look so good. I bet you make some really good applesauce. Applebutter is my favorite of all time. Will you be sharing your recipes for applesauce and applebutter?
