Feeding Teachers

Today a group of us moms will take lunch to school to feed the wonderful support staff and teachers at our kids’ school. I’m bringing a salad.

The Moms In Touch group organizes this, and it’s a real treat for the teachers!

I love sharing and showing hospitality this way, as my husband and I so appreciate the teachers at this school and the effort and time that they put into our kids.

It’s our little way of saying “thank you.” Our sons are in 9th and 7th grade, so there are a lot of teachers who look after and teach our young lads:)

I seem to get stuck for a few months on one tasty salad, making it whenever I’m asked to bring a salad.
I tape the dressing recipe up inside my kitchen cabinet and I keep the ingredients on hand at all times.

Right now my salad for the season is a mandarin orange green salad. But what makes it so delicious is the poppy seed salad dressing that I’ve had in my recipe book for over 15 years. It came from my cousin, Anni. So I pulled it out of the archives and it’s a BIG HIT! Try it and see what you think!

Poppy Seed Dressing
2/3 c oil
2/3 c sugar
¼ c cider vinegar
¼ c lemon juice
3 T poppy seeds
1 tsp salt
¼ c onions, chopped
Mix, shake well before using.
(Salad: greens, mandarin oranges, toasted nuts, green onion, feta cheese)
You can also add chicken!

Do you do anything special for your kid’s teachers?

(Top photo: Look what we came home to last week? Beautiful peony in our backyard! Salad bowl: 16 incher for 10 cents at a garage sale.)

Our peonies are just getting buds...
My Mom was a teacher herself, so she always made sure our teachers felt appreciated with small gifts and even entire cakes for individual teachers! We'd also invite them to lunch in our home on occasion, and that continued even into my college years.

What a wonderfully thoughtful thing to do for the teachers! That salad looks absolutely scrumptious and beautiful... all at the same time.

But then you're good at that kind of thing! ;-)

I LOVE this salad - there is a great restaurant here that makes this exactly. We loved it so much we made them sell us some fo their dressing in a Ziploc! To die for!

I'm so glad you shared the recipe.

Wow, that salad looks fantastic. I may have to give it a try! (But if you read my blog today you'll see I'd MUCH rather go to your house and have you prepare it for me.)

I love taking good care of our kids' teachers. I help organize a monthly luncheon where we all provide food. And we've set up a "teacher appreciation week" which is next week. It really helps spur all the parents to show their appreciation by giving them this reminder. For five days, they get lots of food and gifts every day.

Right now my dilemma is that I have 14 faculty/staff members I want to take care of and I'm working on doing that on a budget!

Hi, Sandy, welcome home! You're getting right to work, I see. That salad looks delish. I love salads & make a mandarin orange one that's similar. I think our dressings are a little different, but your's sounds great. Love feta cheese & goat cheese on salads. Yum-yum!!

What a wonderful thing to do! I also keep favorite recipes taped to the inside of cabinets, makes quick work of popular items.

I think this is such a great idea.:)

I use to always send gifts and notes at Christmas and the end of the year to the preschool teachers...and I use to teach preschool a long time ago.
But now I am my girls' teacher! I home school...it's rewarding, but alas, I don't get those fun little "thank yous"...sigh!
The salad looks scrumptious!

What a blessing you all are to those teachers.

And your salad looks wonderful. Thanks for the dressing recipe.

P.S.

LOVED ALL of your picutres from your recent travels. Looks like you had a wonderful time. I'm only slightly jealous! LOL

Sandy, thanks for letting others know what you do to encourage teachers...as a teacher myself and someone who has worked tirelessly to encourage teachers through writing and speaking, I appreciate it. People ask me all the time what they can do to show appreciation to teachers, and since this week is Teacher Appreciation Week, I will oblige...for ideas, check my Apples & Chalkdust blog at www.vickicaruana.blogspot.com

What a great thought. I wish my kids had teachers so that I could bring them some yummy food. The salad sounds good. I'll have to try the dressing.

What a nice idea! Thanks for sharing! Love that salad! I'll try your dressing.

My questions is: Where do you store that bowl? Do you have lots of storage space?

Your pictures are beautiful! I make the same dressing, but I put 2 Poppy and 1 T celery seeds (the celery seed actually adds to the flavor of the dressing).

I LOVE the bowl ... have I mentioned my obsession of collecting serving dishes???

I am so going to be making your salad for an upcoming luncheon coming up! Thanks for sharing!
Can you believe how busy this time of year is?!
I won't know what to do with myself come June!

Tammy, I've been homeschooling for 22 years. Make sure your kids remember to say thank you to you, and often! We have always shown appreciation to outside tutors or teachers our kids have occasionally had. Seems like all teachers like a little appreciation now and again!
